We went to the Old Town of Constanta to see what tourists say when we ask them if they like or dislike the city centre, a place that is an attraction point in all major urban areas in the country or Europe.
Opinions ranged from people who were happy with the way the centre looked, who thought it was neat, to people who pointed out the need to renovate the buildings and the ruins left in disrepair, which in their view “spoil the view of the centre”.
The first tourist I spoke to was 46-year-old Pierre, who works for a youth centre in Belgium. Pierre finds the city centre a pleasant place to be and hopes that all the ongoing work will be tastefully completed and beautify the area. He said that although some buildings are being renovated, such as the Casino, there are still places that would be worth restoring, giving the example of the House with Lions.
Eimund, who is 45 and an engineer in Norway, said that both Constanța and the old town were below his expectations. Eimund already knew a few things about the Romanian coast from his work colleague in Constanța, but he confessed that the main attraction in Constanta for him is the sea.
Liviu is a 55-year-old engineer from Ploiești who came to the sea with his wife. From his perspective, the pedestrian area is well looked after, but he is visually disturbed by the unfinished 8-storey building in the middle of Ovidiu Square, which, in his view, has no place in an area where all the buildings are up to 4 floors high.
Alin is a 44-year-old IT-ist who has come all the way from Timișoara with his family to the seaside, but he is unhappy with the appearance of the Peninsula and says that compared to other cities in the country, he doesn’t see any progress in Constanța. “You can see that they are trying to make changes, I see a lot of renovations (…), but these should have been done over time, not all at once”.
Expectations have been met for Laura, a 36-year-old quality specialist, and her family, who are on the coast for the first time. The woman says the old centre is more pleasant compared to their home town of Satul Mare and the pedestrian area is “superb”. She also drew attention to the existence of building sites in the area and hopes that the centre will be more and more well looked after and that she will visit more often with her family.
We also spoke to Vlad from Cluj-Napoca, who, at the age of 30, runs a Youtube channel about travel, and who, for the first time, is coming with his family to the sea in Constanța and not to the surrounding resorts. Vlad explained that he went for a walk in the city centre and liked what he saw. He also claimed that the area has a lot of potential if it is constantly looked after and if the buildings in the area are renovated.
